Some Short Ficlets

I haven't posted anything in awhile, so... here's some ficlets I wrote for people for Hogsmeade. The quality is variable and they are short and written quickly for points, but I'm fond of a couple of them, particularly the first one. If you only read one, read that one! I need to write more Founders fic. (I hope it doesn't break some etiquette code to post these to my personal journal. D:)

Founders fic, Rowena POV; 454 wordsCollapse )

Neville & Ginny during DH after Luna is taken; 518 wordsCollapse )

Andromeda/Ted first kiss fluff; 243 wordsCollapse )

Tonks teaching Ginny to rollerskate, pre-OotP; 284 wordsCollapse )

Harry & Luna, first Christmas after the war; 321 wordsCollapse )

Harry/Ginny, the fluffiest thing I've ever written; 521 wordsCollapse )

In other news, looks like I'm going to be matched with Harry Potter on my Matchmaker app, which is pretty cool and not terribly surprising. I also got nominated for three categories in Hufflepuff Term Awards. I got nominated for Biggest Gryffinpuff, Favorite Baby Badger and Most Creative Badger. That made me really happy and warm inside, as I totally wasn't expecting it! I especially was flattered by the last one. :D

I don't usually do this, but I'd also like to welcome my new friends, mk_tortie and sweetthumbelina. Glad to have you guys!

ETA: Oh, I wanted to advertise this new stamping community I joined, muppets_stamp. I loooove the Muppets, so if you do too, and you enjoy stamping comms, you should join. And stamp my application? :D

My posts have been infrequent as always, though I read my friendslist every day. Still, I thought I'd poke my head in and say hi.

What have I been up to since I last posted?

Well, online I have been participating in hogwartsishome, but not as much as I would like. In fact, I just realized that for the first time ever since I joined, I didn't sort all of the applications this last week! Oops. :(

In the rest of my life, I have been playing D&D with my brother every other Friday, as I usually do, and also playing Sims 3 a lot. I've become pretty obsessed with it. It's kind of funny, but the thing that made me decide to reinstall it was talking to somebody about how much it sucked compared to Sims 2. I feel like such a hypocrite now!

I got shin splints a couple of days ago, which really sucked. It made it pretty much excruciating to walk. It was okay, though, because it healed a lot faster than I expected.

My grandma is in town right now, which is really great. It's wonderful to see her. I also have an out of town friend in town right now, but I think he might be leaving before I get a chance to see him again, which is too bad. He's at a GWAR show with some of our other friends right now. I really don't get the appeal of GWAR. Call me a wimp or whatever you want, but the lyrics are just disgusting and offensive.

I've got lots of stuff I should do today, but I've been procrastinating on the internet as usual. I joined Goodreads today, and it's really cool. It's basically a website where you add/rate/review books you've read/are reading/want to read. You can organize them on your "bookshelf", take quizzes, answer trivia questions, join groups, etc. etc. The one feature that I thought it would have, that I'm disappointed is missing, is that it doesn't recommend books you might like based on your ratings. That seems like a really obvious feature to me, but oh well. Anyway, if anybody has an account or wants to make an account, and wants to add me, my profile is here.

Oh yeah, and I'm not seeing Deathly Hallows until Thanksgiving. :( But I'm already thoroughly spoiled for it, on purpose, so I won't be bothered if people talk about it around me. I've heard really good things about it, too. Anybody have any thoughts on it they want to share?

Nov. 9th, 2010

Hey guys! It's been awhile since I've posted in here. I guess I haven't really felt like I have much to say. But, uh, I've been participating in stamping comms lately, and I've gotten a fair amount of stamps, so I thought I would post my stamps, and my thoughts on them. This is probably not interesting to anybody but me, but hey, whatcha gonna do? On the other hand, if you're interested in learning a little bit more about me, there's some personal stuff under the cut(s).

First up, my Elemental StampCollapse )

Greek Myth Stamp (and some rambling on Greek mythology in general, including my desire for a Greek Myth fandom)Collapse )

Disney StampsCollapse )

Well now, if you read all that, you probably have more of a clue of who I am now.

Time to talk about Yuletide! I'm thinking of signing up this year for the first time in EVER. I haven't in the past because I don't trust myself to turn something in on time, but this year I honestly think I could do it. Part of that is from participating in hogwartsishome. This probably makes me sound like a total loser, but I think that community has helped me already, by making me have more faith in my ability to do things and be responsible. So that's neat!

One last thing: I need some icons that are NOT Harry Potter icons, now that I actually do things on this LJ that do not involve Harry Potter. I think I'll hunt for some today.

HiH Triwizard Tournament First Task!

The first task for hogwartsishome's Triwizard Tournament starts in 15 minutes, and I'm really excited. I wish I could use my own computer, but I'm hanging out at my bf's house with some friends, and I don't have internet access on my own laptop here, so I'm using his. I hope I can complete the task to satisfaction.

Also? I told my friends about being a member of an online Harry Potter community and they didn't make fun of me! :D

EDIT: They still haven't posted it! It's been almost an hour and a half since it was supposed to be posted, and my boyfriend is waiting on me to get off the computer. I think I'm going to give up in about 10 minutes. I can still do it tomorrow. Maybe I won't get as many points, but I just can't stay up all night waiting for them to never even post it. I feel bad for my team, but I need my sleep, 'cause I have stuff to do tomorrow.

Here's hoping they post it in the next 10 minutes! :( :(

I'm considering doing NaNoWriMo this year. I've tried before and always lost, but I'm thinking if I just write the most self-indulgent bullcrap ever and focus on getting the words out instead of whether it's a good story, I might be able to do it. Now I'm working on figuring out a plot. I'm stuck at one particular point, but I've got a month to figure this stuff out.

Who else is considering doing NaNo this year? Do you know what you're writing yet?

Fanfic: The Caradoc Mission

So end1essly said extremely nice things about one of my fanfics in the latest edition of hogwartsishome's Daily Prophet. Which inspired me to post it here, which I've been meaning to do anyway. So here it is! It's short, but I enjoyed writing it.

Title: The Caradoc Mission
Summary: Emmeline, Marlene and Dorcas are waiting up until the Order members who went to go rescue Caradoc Dearborn return. But when they do return, something is dreadfully wrong.
Characters/Pairings: Emmeline Vance, Marlene McKinnon, Dorcas Meadowes, Alastor Moody, Edgar Bones, Benjy Fenwick, Caradoc Dearborn

So you guys want to see something gross?

Cut because of photos, not actually so gross it will make you want to vom or anything. There's also a nice picture under here!Collapse )

Anyway, moving on. Lately, I've been participating a fair amount at hogwartsishome, which is fun.

I've also been doing some writing, and I came up with a plot that I really like for an original story idea I'd been kicking around in my head for a year. There's only a few loose threads I need to figure out, though one of them is a pretty big one. There's a couple different ways I could deal with it, but I'm not sure which one I like best or if there's a better one out there. :/ Once I figure it out, I will start writing.

As for what I've been consuming, media-wise, I've watched the first couple Hellcats episode, the new Community episode, and the first It's Always Sunny episode for this season. That's about it so far. What has everybody been watching, if anything?

My Version of Dionysos's Origin

I told kitty_catline about having written up Dionysos's origin story, and she encouraged me to post it here. It's in my own words, and a sort of an amalgamation of various stories and myths about him. I ended up rewriting it real quick, because it was kind of a mess before. I think it flows a little better now. It's quite short.

I chose to use the spelling Dionysos, because I consider it more authentic, and, more to the point, I like how it looks.

I haven't posted in awhile! I've been away from the computer a lot recently, and when I am on LJ, I'm usually hanging out at hogwartsishome.

I haven't been reading much fanfic lately, because I've been busy reading the Vorkosigan Saga, by Lois McMaster Bujold. Which is an amazing series, by the way, even if you're not crazy about science fiction. The woman is a genius at characterization. I mean, really, really incredible stuff.

Other than that, I'm not sure what else to say. In general, I don't consume much non-book media. White Collar is the only TV show I watch, and I really like it, despite the claims I've heard of it being boring. It's all a matter of opinion, I guess.

My boyfriend has started back at college again, so I'm seeing him less, which is too bad. But I still see him pretty regularly, so it's okay.

I haven't been doing much writing lately, either, I've been pretty blocked. I have part 4 of that fic I was working on (How Distant), but I didn't want to post it until I finished part 5 (the last part) which I, uh, never ended up finishing, unfortunately. Oops.

Fic Recs

Some more recs of two fics I read recently and loved!

I recently read Duties of the Hostess (Part 2) by wotcher_wombat. It's an excellent story that has many of my favorite elements in it. Socially adept characters, the Black family, different eras from the HP universe, etc. The main character is Dorea Black Potter, who can be found on the Black family tree, married to Charlus Potter, and it's set at a party she is hosting, for the first time in years.

The prose is elegant, the characters are fully fleshed out, and the pacing is brilliant. I highly recommend it.

Also, by the same author is Scenes from the Hog's Head (Part 2) which has equally excellent pacing and characterization. It helps that it stars some of my favorite characters: Sirius Black and the Dumbledore brothers. All three of them are very much as I see them from canon, and Aberforth in particular is extrapolated from his few appearances perfectly.

30 Days of Harry Potter

Don't worry, I'm not going to subject you to 30 actual days of this meme. But here are my answers to all of the questions in one post, if anybody's interested. I swiped this from blaze_villain so thanks to her!

My "Ships"

Just posting a list of things that I guess I could be considered to "ship". I would rather refer to them as "ships that I find intriguing". The bolded ones are the ones I especially like. This list is ever-changing, but some things are more constant than others.

Canon: Harry/Ginny, Albus/Gellert (yes, I consider this canon), Draco/Asteria, Ron/Hermione, Bill/Fleur, George/Angelina, James/Lily

Fanon Slash: Sirius/James, George/Lee, Albus/Elphias, Harry/Draco, Albus Severus/Scorpius, Draco/Blaise, Neville/Draco, Harry/Ron

Fanon Het: Dean/Luna, Sirius/Lily (but not as infidelity), Scorpius/Rose, Sirius/any of his cousins, Draco/Hermione, Albus Severus/Rose, Blaise/Ginny, Dean/Ginny, Sirius/Tonks

Fanon Femslash: Fleur/Ginny (as long as it doesn't step on Bill/Fleur's toes), Tonks/Ginny, Bellatrix/Andromeda, Pansy/Asteria, Ginny/Asteria

OT3s: Sirius/James/Lily, George/Lee/Angelina, Albus Severus/Rose/Scorpius, Harry/Ginny/Tonks

Naturally, these are absolutely not the only things I will read. I mean, I did rec a Cho/Pansy fic the other day. And yeah, some of these I have never read fic for, or have read only one or two fics for. Sadly. :(

Quotes by Albus Dumbledore

I've decided to post a collection of my favorite Dumbledore quotes, as a tribute to this most excellent man who I consider the best character in the series by a long shot. This is a long post, and is probably mostly of interest to me, but you are welcome to peruse it if you so desire.

I've divided these quotes into categories. Within the categories, however, they are in no particular order.

The Poignant/Sad/ForeshadowingCollapse )

The Funny/CharmingCollapse )

The BadassCollapse )

Well, I hope you enjoyed these quotes! Naturally, there are many more wonderful, thrilling, hilarious, awesome quotes by Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter books, but these are some of my favorites.

A Fic Rec

Just read this super fun Pansy/Cho called The Sporting Life. I like Cho a lot and the sex is hot, but I also really really like the characterization of the Slytherins and the interaction between them. Blaise's characterization is particularly funny, and I get excited whenever I see Theodore Nott show up now that I've written him into the Draco-fic I'm working on, even if the characterization is different from mine.

So yes, it's excellent and you should read it if you like femslash. It's short, too, so no big commitment. It's mostly just really cute.

Notes on Fic

I really intended How Distant to be a stand-alone fic with a number of equally short stand-alone sequels, but it seems to have morphed into a chapter fic. Whoops. Well, it'll probably still be a fairly short one, probably with sequels. But I suspect there'll be a few more chapters before I wrap this one up.

I'm really enjoying Theodore Nott in this story. I'd never written him before, and I'm trying my best to extrapolate him based on book and interview canon. What made me interested in writing him as a foil for Draco was this quote from JKR that, "we rarely see Draco talking to anybody he considers a real equal, and he is forced to see Theodore as such, because Theodore is just as pure-blooded as he is, and somewhat cleverer," and also her description of him as, "a clever, solitary boy who has never felt compelled to join "gangs," such as the one headed by Draco."

So I hope that comes across in this story.

In other news, I'm not sure what other people use as a reference for writing HP fic, but I use (besides the books, of course!), the Harry Potter Wiki. I find it superior to HP Lexicon for my uses, which is what I used to use back in the day. And it's fun to just trawl about on, too, learning new things.

Fic: How Distant (part 2)

Title: How Distant
Characters/Pairing: Draco Malfoy, Theodore Nott
Rating: PG
Word count: 2009 this part
Summary: Draco is moving into Nott Manor, and he's starting to remember exactly why he wasn't close friends with Nott at Hogwarts. Still, anything's better than a place infested with the memories of war and terror, right?
Author's Note: The title of this fic comes from a poem by Phillip Larkin named "How Distant". In particular the line, "How distant the departure of young men."

Chapter Two: The Departure of Young MenCollapse )

Aug. 5th, 2010

Fic: How Distant

Title: How Distant
Characters/Pairing: Draco Malfoy, Narcissa Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, Theodore Nott
Rating: PG
Word count: 2246 this part
Summary: Draco can't take it anymore. Malfoy Manor holds too many memories, and so few of them good. His parents are not pleased to hear he's decided to leave.
Author's Note: This is a sequel of sorts to my fic Nightmare but it can be read on its own. The title of this fic comes from a poem by Phillip Larkin named "How Distant". In particular the line, "How distant the departure of young men."

Chapter One: SuffocatedCollapse )

Fic: Nightmare (Draco Malfoy, Gen, rated PG)

Title: Nightmare
Characters/Pairing: Draco Malfoy, Narcissa Malfoy
Rating: PG
Word count: 507
Summary: Draco awakes from a nightmare. Post-DH.
Author's Note: May be the first scene from a longer story some day.
